Olivia Matter (Sr.), a Studio Art student, was nominated as Artist of the Month by Mrs. Judy Marquez (Visual and Performing Arts Dept.). Marquez said that Mattera always “goes beyond her expectations because she focuses on every project and makes sure she hits every possible point of [each] project. Her projects are outstanding.”
Mattera said that when she was younger, she loved the art of Robert Wyland, an American artist best known for his portrayals of marine life. Her favorite museum is his art gallery in Laguna Beach, a complete studio dedicated to the art of marine life. She revealed that Wyland’s work heavily inspired her to become an artist herself.
Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mattera took many art classes as a young child. She was encouraged by her mother to participate in the art programs the stores Michaels and Color me Mine offered, and went on to paint a mural for her elementary school.
As for Mattera’s plans for the future, she wants to continue pursuing art in college in addition to studying marine science. She thanks her mother for motivating her to this day. She said, “My mother inspires me to do what I want to do.”
Marquez said, “She is such a quality person, she has a great personality and a good sense of humor. She has an ability to interact with different students and she’s a pleasure to be around in the classroom. Her ability to see the details and incorporate them into her work makes Olivia a unique artist.”
Mattera’s advises other young artists to “create work that they are proud of. Being true to yourself and being confident in your work creates amazing artists and individuals.”
