Boys Volleyball defeats Northwood 3-1

With a final score of 3-1, UHS defeated Northwood High School (NHS) last Tuesday, April 11.
According to starting setter Christian Beltran (Jr.), NHS is one of the league’s toughest competitors.
“Last year’s team was pretty good. We were 1-1 against them. This year, their starters consist of juniors and sophomores, just like us, so we expect it to be close every time we play them,” Beltran said. Despite the anticipated challenge, UHS managed to secure a lead early on by scraping away with the first game, winning 25-22.
The second game, however, was the real nail-biter. A typical volleyball game will end when a team reaches 25 points and has a 2 point lead over the opponent. Game two went a total of 32 points over regulation, finishing as 41-39 in Northwood’s favor.
UHS finally locked in the victory in games 3 and 4 with scores of 25-16 and 25-20, respectively. Beltran finished with 56 assists and 18 digs, while Alhasan Hussein (Jr.) led with 21 spike attacks and 7 blocks.
Having defeated one of the league’s greatest threats, the team is optimistic about a successful season and potentially a seed into CIF. Boys volleyball is scheduled to have their next game on Tuesday, April 18 against Beckman.
