On Wednesday February 12, the University High School (UHS) boys soccer team finished an amazing season with a win against the Northwood High School (4-0) at the UHS home stadium. Mel McCurrie (Sr.) scored twice, while Arman Tehrani (Sr.) and Jake Lebovich (Sr.) both scored once. The Trojans were backed by goaltender Michael Armand (Jr.) who was able to keep the door shut for the Timberwolves’s offense. The Trojans had clinched 2nd place in the Pacific Coast League (PCL), regardless of the result of the game against Northwood.
Captain Emilio San Roman (Sr.) said, “Since we were already locked into CIF it was a no pressure kind of game and everyone had a lot of fun, but now it’s time to get back to work and prepare for our first CIF game.”
The Trojans will enjoy their successful season but will look forward to the challenge that awaits them in the CIF playoffs. Lebovich said, “We didn’t play our best today but it was nice to score a goal. Hopefully we’ll carry our good form from earlier in the season into CIF and have a strong run.”
With the final league game in the books, the UHS boys soccer team has clinched a guaranteed CIF spot for the first time in many years. The Trojans placed 2nd in PCL this season with a league record of 7-2-1, trailing behind the Corona Del Mar Sea Kings. The UHS boys soccer team has improved from last year’s 4-4-2 league record. They also look to improve from last year’s early exit in round one of the CIF playoffs.
The team was led this year by captains Emilio San Roman, McCurrie, and Mayhar Shabani (Sr.). McCurrie led the team with 21 goals. The goalies for this season were Cody Nguyen (Jr.) and Michael Armand (Jr.). The Trojans wait to see who they will face in the first round of CIF playoffs.
