On Tuesday, October 21, the University High School (UHS) girls tennis team defeated No. 3 ranked Corona del Mar High School (CDM) 13-5 to capture its 50th consecutive league win and secure its 5th straight Pacific Coast League championship. The girls tennis team has not lost a league match since 2009.

The first round of doubles was off to a rough start when doubles partners Kyara Sutton (Sr.) and Michelle Maddox (Jr.) lost 0-5. The team remained positive and smoothed out its rough patch when Ashlyn Wang (So.) and Tiffany Madlambayan (Jr.) won their doubles match with a score of 7-5. Doubles team Kayti Luu (Sr.) and Celine Gruaz (Sr.) defeated CDM 7-6, ending the first round of doubles with a win.

UHS dominated on the singles side, sweeping set after set. Judy Kam (Jr.) started off the winning streak with a 6-3 victory over CDM’s No. 1, followed by Alyssa Rudin (Jr.) who defeated her opponent 6-1. Yuki Asami (Sr.) secured a win in the last round of singles with another 6-1 victory.

Co-captain Becca Kim (Sr.) said, “Our hard work is really paying off. I’m really proud of the determination of our team and the success we’re finding so far.”
