On February 6, the University High School (UHS) girls basketball team was defeated in its “Pink Out for Breast Cancer Awareness” game against Corona Del Mar High School (CDM) 22-47.
The Trojans’ defense kept the score close during the first quarter, which ended with the Trojans trailing 5-8. However, CDM managed to extend its lead in the second quarter, and by halftime CDM led 20-10. The Sea Kings scored an additional 15 points in the third quarter, while the Trojans scored six.
According to Yasmine Choroomi (Jr.), the team followed its pregame defense strategy and packed the key throughout the game, but it “could have dropped down on the post players faster.” Captain Allison Piper (Jr.), the top scorer of the game, commented, “I think our press worked pretty well, but we were having the most trouble on offense, getting our shots to go in and making moves on the basket.” She continued to say that the team needs to work on communication and shooting percentages before its next game.
The loss brought UHS to a 2-6 league record and 12-12 overall season record. The girls basketball team played Northwood High School in an away game on Tuesday, February 10.
