The UHS Comedy Sportz team is relying on fundraising events to pay for various team fees for the first time.

Comedy Sportz (CSz) is UHS’s theater improv team that performs once a month as part of the nationwide Comedy Sportz High School League. The audition for CSz ended last week and this year’s team consists of 31 members. Each member needs to audition every year in order to stay on the team.

Last year, the team had to cancel two matches due to scheduling conflicts, one of them being the faculty match. “The faculty match is one of our biggest events. We lost a great deal of income when we had to cancel last year,” the advisor of Drama Club, Ms. Ranae Bettger (Visual and Performing Arts Dept.) said.

The fees required each year for Comedy Sportz to function is about $7500, including each member’s player fee, referee fee, coach fee, and the registration fee for the team. By the end of last year, the team was short on money by about $1,400.

A total of $300 in funds from the summer match titled “Save Comedy Sportz” helped to pay for these expenses. “The turnout was alright, about as much as we would have expected for a summer match,” Team Manager Tejas Dhindsa (Jr.) said.

The team’s next fundraiser is the Variety Show (formerly Talent Show), which is Drama Club’s biggest fundraiser. This income benefits other programs of Drama Club, such as the Cappies team and the upcoming Fall Play. There will be an interest meeting in Room 223 during lunch this Friday for the Variety Show. All skills are welcome, including singing, dancing, magic, instrumental music, visual arts, air guitar, lip sync battles, rap battles, etc.

“We are expecting to make at least $5,400 form the Variety Show,” Comedy Sportz Captain Corinne Alsop (Sr.) said.  “The most we can make is $10,800.” Bettger added.

The team members have close ties with each other. “Comedy Sportz is my favorite thing to do. There isn’t really any other activity that’s pure, constructive fun directly for the enjoyment of other people.” Dhindsa said. “To me, Comedy Sportz is an outlet that lets me be weird and random in a room full of other weird and random kids,” team member Rishan Ephrem (So.) said.

This year’s new team has been practicing tirelessly to prepare for their first match this Friday. The match starts at 6:30 pm in the Big Theater. Admission is $5 with ASB and $7 without.
