Republican Former Mayor of Irvine Steven S. Choi has defeated Democrat Sean Jay Panahi for California’s 68th State Assembly seat by a 21.6% margin of 28,141 votes as Incumbent Republican State Senator John Moorlach defeated Democrat Ari Grayson in California’s 37th State Senate District race by a 15.8% margin of 43,790 votes.

Overall, California’s state legislature has remained under Democratic control, with Democrats winning 21 State Senate seats and 52 Assembly Seats on November 8, and Republicans winning only 4 and 23 seats in each California state house respectively.

Following the election of Donald Trump to the presidency and as Republicans took control of both the House of Representatives and U.S. Senate, the California State Legislature released a statement.

We woke up feeling like strangers in a foreign land, because yesterday Americans expressed their views on a pluralistic and democratic society that are clearly inconsistent with the values of the people of California,” Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Paramount) said, according to the Los Angeles Times.
