Girls Varsity Water Polo was defeated by Northwood 11-6, on January 10. This loss against Northwood in the second Pacific Coast League game of the season places UHS in fourth place.
“I think everyone was just a little off today,” Captain Gauvri Nathwani (Sr.) said, “I know we can play better and I’m excited to play them a second time because we know what we need to do.”
This shortcoming, however, did not sway the determination of the players.
“Improvement comes from motivation,” Angela Yan (Soph.) said. “You have to try hard to get better at something; if u don’t try hard, you will always remain at a steady place. Losing a game gives our team motivation to fix our mistakes and prove ourselves for future games.”
The girls went into the first quarter unable to score many goals and soon realized it would be difficult to get the ball past the All-American Team goalie on the Northwood team. Alison Huxman (Jr.) scored one goal in the first quarter and Captain Chandlyr Denaro (Sr.) scored two in the second quarter by converting the turnovers by Northwood.
Then, Nathwani and Yan both lobbed over the goalie’s head during the third quarter. The final score came off a Yan lob during the final quarter.
“After we figured out their defense and maneuvered around them, we scored more goals,” goalie Laura Yang (Sr.) said, “I think we scored most of our goals in the second and third quarter because we managed to lob the ball over the goalie by locking her in.”
The Girls Varsity Water Polo team is playing away against Corona del Mar next on January 12.
