Golden Cigarette: a poem

You caught me in my bed,
Wrapped the catheter around my neck,
You diagnosed me with pills and paper
Doctor’s notes to get me away from the teachers
Marlboro packets to get me under the bleachers
You caught me like an animal with no specific feature,
You treated me like a lucrative statistic;
My pain and anguish – surely you’ve missed it –
You read my heartbeat like Morse code
Brought me to my knees and made me fold
But this isn’t a game or a gamble
This is my life on the table
I’m hit from all sides
Try to realize
Try to fantasize,
Think wise
Of what you’re going to do next because I am the generation
The generation that hurts the generation that can’t breathe
We.
Can’t.
Breathe…
Under this smoking, golden cigarette.
