The Boys Varsity wrestling team placed tenth out of 20 teams at Tustin VR Tournament. In addition, senior wrestling star Lorena Egea placed first at her all girls tournament in Santa Ana. Although the boys fought hard and did well in their placement, their progress was inhibited by a lack of wrestlers as only five were able to compete.
The five wrestlers who competed were juniors Ethan Chin and Kea Sadri and seniors Matthew Garcia, Sebastian Corona and one of the team captains, Nathan Ohashi. Chin did well, placing third in his weight group of 135 lbs, and Corona placed fifth in the group of 126 lbs.
Coach Takemura was pleased with the overall performance that his wrestlers put up. “Our guys competed hard, but we still need to improve on staying focused and capitalizing on our opponent’s mistakes,” Takemura said when commenting on what the team needed to improve on.
Ohashi commented on the development of the team, and was hopeful for the team’s improvement as the season went on. He recognized the team’s hard work and acknowledges that the team can improve. “I don’t think anyone was eliminated with zero wins but we do have work to do,” Ohashi said. “We showed good potential as a varsity group early in the season and that can translate well alter in the season.”
Egea, on top of her placing first in her tournament at 150 lbs, was the middleweight MVP of her tournament. She also had the fastest fall times of four minutes and 20 seconds in an overall of four matches. Egea also pinned her very last opponent in eight seconds. She is five and zero in pins so far this season.
The boys team’s next match is on Wednesday, December 20 against Corona Del Mar High School.
