Boys Soccer won 2-0 against Long Beach High School on February 16. The team now has an overall season record of 17-1-3 and a league record of 9-0-1.
The team explains the significance of the match. “This game was important because we needed to win to move on to the next round [of CIF playoffs],” right wing senior Ivan Ma said. “We almost scored about five times, which was defining. We hope to have a more stable midfield and put away our chances.”
Coach Martin Carrington agrees with Ma’s characterization of the game. “It was the first round of playoffs,” Carrington said. “So mentally it is always a change from regular league games where we are familiar with the opponents. And the fact that knowing if you lose the season is over and for some their high school careers makes these games all the more challenging and tense.”
Carrington also recognizes goalkeeper senior Jimmy Choi for his plays throughout the game. “Certainly the defining moments of the game were our goalkeeper Jimmy Choi making two great saves in the first 8 minutes and then us scoring in the 12th minutes,” Carrington said. “It was a big momentum change. Our two goal scorers obviously took their chances well so they stand out and again our keeper for keeping us in the game in those first few minutes.”
