Girls Varsity Softball won 8-2 against Corona del Mar, recovering from their past two losses. The Trojans currently have a league record of 2-2 and are fifth in league, while CdM has a league score of 0-3 and is sixth in PCL.

Freshman Danielle Prosky lead by going two for three on the game. She also got on base after being hit by an inside pitch. Senior Peyton Mattson also added in a stolen base.

“This season is looking to be one of our most successful seasons yet, and I’m hoping we come out with happy outcomes after our games and eventually go to CIF,” captain Mattson said. “On Thursday we beat CdM 8-2, and we plan on continuing to play each game with our full effort and work together as a team to win more games.”

The team also had 29 at bats while striking out eight times. The Trojan pitchers also left seven runners stranded on base, while having an Earned Run Average (ERA) of 2.0.

Mattson is a four year varsity softball player. She has been leading the Trojans this season with hopes of taking UHS farther.
“I’ve been playing softball for about 9 years now,” said Mattson. “Softball has challenged me to push myself everyday and become a better player as well as a better teammate.
I’ve also met some of my best friends through softball which is one of my favorite parts about playing, sharing these experiences with such good friends of mine.”

The team’s top batter has been senior Janette Oh. She currently leads the team with a batting average of .435. She also leads the team in runs batted in (11), doubles (9), triples (2), hits (20), and runs (14). Freshman Sydney Spencer has been the ace of the rotation, holding a 5-1 record with a 3.89 ERA. Spencer and junior Jackie Diaz have held down the starting spots of the rotation, pitching 77 of the team’s 79 innings.

The team will play a home game against Woodbridge High on Thursday, April 19. The Woodbridge Warriors are currently placed first in PCL, and are currently undefeated in league.
