Boys Varsity Basketball had a costly 17 turnovers in a 79-88 loss to Sonora. The team led by two points heading into the final quarter, where they were outscored 31-20. The game took place on November 28, and gave the Trojans a 3-3 pre-season record.
“We had some bad turnovers down the stretch… they just wanted it more in the 4th [quarter],” junior guard Arjun Gill said.
Gill led the way in assists, contributing six to the team’s efforts. Leading the way in scoring was sophomore guard Kody Uyesugi, who continued his impressive campaign with 27 points, 15 of which came from behind the arc.
Senior Andrea Roy and junior Will Stenta also contributed double digit points (10 and 21 respectively).
“We played really hard but we had many missed opportunities to score led to our loss… we played very well until the last quarter,” Uyesugi said.
The team looks forward to reducing the mistakes that led to the loss.
“We need to improve our team defense and minimize our turnovers. Sonora had too many easy layups,” Uyesugi said.
Junior forward Sam Aryan agrees that the defense needs work.
“We have a couple of really good shooters on our team as well as hustle players but something our whole team knows we have to work on is our defense. Once we start to get that down, we will be a tough team to beat,” Aryan said.
Aryan has been contributing to their defensive improvement, with a team record of three steals along with nine rebounds in the game.
The team will continue its preseason with games against Saddleback Valley Christian and San Juan Hills this week on December 5 and 7 respectively.
