Boys Soccer defeated Mira Costa 2-1 in their Division 1 CIF round of 32 match, giving the team their first D1 CIF victory in program history.
This crucial victory for the team did not come without its difficulties, as they trailed in the first half, and were able to win in overtime on a golden goal.
“After going down 0-1 in the first half, we were able to secure a goal in the second against an excellent opponent,” junior captain and defender Nic Conta said.
The goal in the second half was the turning point in the match, pushing the game into overtime, and giving the team the momentum to ultimately win.
“Getting a goal in with about 10 minutes left in the second half went really well, and made us want to try harder to get the golden goal,” junior midfielder Andrew Jang said.
In addition to moving up in CIFs, boys soccer felt relieved to defeat Mira Costa soccer, a team that was ranked 14 spots higher in state rankings.
“The game was intense; the team we were going against was expected by most to beat us… but, we showed up and defied all expectations” junior midfielder Akash Dewan said.
Coming out of this match victoriously, the team is relieved their hard work in recent years has resulted in a D1 CIF victory.
“It was an unbelievable feeling to win a Division 1 CIF game in overtime like that and an honor to continue the hard work this program has put forth over the last couple years,’’ Conta said.
