On Sunday, September 15th, 2013, the Seattle Seahawks had the loudest fans in sporting history. On top of this amazing accomplishment, the Seahawks defeated the visiting San Francisco 49ers 29-3 on nationally televised Sunday Night Football. Seattle has a history of a loud environment for football games held at the famous Century Link Field.
The previous best record of noise level was 131.76 decibels, set during a soccer match in Istanbul on March 18th, 2011. The Seattle fans reached a 131.9 decibel level in the second quarter when defensive end Michael Bennett sacked Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback of the 49ers who replaced Alex Smith.
Just as the fans thought it could not get any louder, they broke their own record set earlier that night. During a defensive series in the third quarter, the new record was set: 136.6 decibels. Noise is a big factor with home field advantage because it makes communication extremely difficult and rattles the opposing team. Seattle arguably has the best home field advantage in the NFL because of their die-hard fans.
