It’s indisputable that America loves its trucks. For the past 42 years, since 1982, the Ford F-Series truck has been the number one best-selling vehicle in America, destroying competition by miles. From the Chevrolet Silverado to the Ford F-Series, it seems America just can’t get enough of them. One of the only challengers worthy enough to disrupt Ford’s reign over the industry appears to be Tesla.
To many, the “innovative” Cybertruck seems like it is just trying to bandwagon the truck trend, causing many to question its worth. Love it or hate it, Tesla is one of the most successful companies to exist, racking in over $80 billion per year and boasting a net worth of over $700 billion. Despite this, the latest cyber truck model is less than appealing as it costs more than twice the price of Tesla’s Model Y while providing minimal benefits.
One of Cybertruck’s most prominent criticisms is its unappealing look. Before Cybertruck’s release, CEO Elon Musk had set high standards with models such as the X and Y, and each was praised for their signature paint mixtures containing metals and ceramic crystals, which allowed for improved quality. The short layers of paint on the Model X and Y only reinstate the new feel and look of Tesla’s cars compared to others.
From the smooth and appealing curvature of a Tesla car to the vibrant array of paint options, Tesla built a strong reputation and set a high standard for Cybertruck but failed to deliver. Even as it was introduced, the Tesla Cybertruck was simply a joke to customers and couldn’t be taken seriously. Many mocked it and even described it as a “low-polygon video game asset from PlayStation 1.” The stainless steel used to create Cybertruck doesn’t allow for a smooth and appealing curvature, leading to awkward geometrical shapes and an overall flat and monotonous design.
Some would argue that the improved functionality of Cybertruck makes up for the unappealing visuals. Unfortunately, Cybertruck has nothing to show for functionality or looks. Various safety professionals argue that Cybertruck may be more dangerous to pedestrians and cyclists as the heavy steel front paired with significant acceleration can result in brutal injuries. This has resulted in Cybertruck’s complete ban in the EU due to non-compliance with safety regulations and the potential dangers of an imperfect self-driving mode. In addition, the supposed functionality benefits have resulted in various other concerns, such as significant blind spots caused by the awkward vehicle shape.
Apart from the various safety concerns, Cybertruck also lacks durability. While the truck often boasts its durability and can sustain a singular handgun bullet, multiple bullets would easily crack the metal. Additionally, the supposedly indestructible stainless steel is extremely susceptible to rust and environmental conditions, mainly affecting suburban or rural truck owners.
From the square steering wheel and the awkward design to the safety and durability concerns, many consider Cybertruck an utter flop, with recent sales plummeting as manufacturers halted truck deliveries due to unintended acceleration issues. Cybertruck is ultimately a disgrace to Tesla’s company and the strong reputation its employees have worked tirelessly to build. For Tesla to retain its reputation as the future pioneer, drastic action must be taken, and Cybertruck must be reworked. Despite this stumble, Tesla continues to work towards better cars and impressive self-driving features. While the future is still uncertain, the modern drive against climate change and the rise of electric vehicles is promising and provides much hope for the vast possibilities of our future.
