Girls Water Polo finished 3-2 in the South Counties Tournament, winning the first three games and falling short in the final two by 6 goals total. On the first day of the tournament, the Trojans played defeated Santiago High School (SHS) 12-1 and Lakeside High School (LHS) 16-2.
Against SHS, Shawna Kedzie (Sr.) scored seven goals and had two assists. Kedzie, a former member of the Olympics Development Program, transferred from Woodbridge last year and has become a great addition to the team.
In the win against LHS, the Trojans started off strong with 6 first-quarter goals and consistently scored goals for the rest of the game. Ali Huxman (So.) scored four goals, the most for the game, and made one steal.
Molly Hudash (Sr.), who had eight saves, said, “It was a fun game and gave the team an outlet to learn more about how they play as a team.”
UHS played the second day of the tournament without Kedzie. In a win against JW North High School (JWNHS), the Trojans again got off to a quick start, scoring four first-quarter goals. JWNHS only managed two goals total.
UHS forced double overtime against Yucaipa High School, tying the game at eight in the fourth quarter. Yucaipa scored in the second overtime to defeat the Trojans.
In the final game of the tournament against Vista High School (VHS), scoring was evenly spread, as Michela Boarnet (Sr.), Huxman, and Chandler Denaro (Jr.) each scored 2 goals, but it was not enough to keep up with VHS. Co-Captain Anastasia Gomez (Sr.) said, “It was difficult because Shawna is our primary goal scorer, but we tried and did well.”
