UHS Girls Lacrosse added to its successful preseason with a 2-0 showing at the LA/OC Shootout Tournament, beating Peninsula High School (PHS) and La Canada High School (LCHS) 14-9 and 18-4, respectively.
UHS played PHS in this tournament for the second time in the same week, previously winning in overtime by only one goal. The Trojans managed to handle PHS this time behind a balanced scoring attack, with Amanda Shubin (Jr.) and Sarah Verdegan (Sr.) scoring 3 goals each and Ashlyn Wang (Jr.) leading the Trojans with 5 goals.
“We were determined to prove our first win wasn’t just a fluke,” Phoebe Solomon (Jr.) said. “After a number of turnovers and goals, we were able to come together as a single unit and secure the win. It was an extremely satisfying experience and we were glad to see such improvement over a short period of time.”
Against LCHS, Wang again led the scoring attack with 6 goals, followed by Verdegan and Solomon with 2 goals apiece. Verdegan and Solomon each failed to miss a shot, finishing with 1.000 shot percentages. The win capped a perfect 2-0 tournament record and gave the Trojans a 4-1 preseason record.
“We cleaned it up in the second half and worked on our possession skills and on meaningful transitions,” team captain Verdegan said. “Our defense held their offense for an impressive amount of time and turned it over to our offense many times as well.”
Commenting on the tournament as a whole, Verdegan said, “Overall, we achieved the goals we wanted to. One, we played good, clean lacrosse, two, we kept a level head, and three, we had a lot of fun and came closer as a team.”
