On Friday, October 11, University High School (UHS) and Woodbridge High School (WHS) gathered to play their first league game of the football season and to officially dedicate the new stadium in a ceremony during halftime. Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) Superintendent Terry Walker and IUSD Board of Education President Gavin Huntley-Fenner spoke during the ceremony and celebrated with Associated Student Body (ASB) members from both schools.
The dedication speech during halftime thanked those who demonstrated commitment for the collaboration in building the stadium for students and their families.
Terry Walker (IUSD) said, ” Over the years, hundreds of thousands of students and their families will gather at this venue to experience athletic competitions, pageants, commencement ceremonies and other activities that celebrate the values we share as a community, and in doing so they’ll be establishing new traditions and creating memories that will last a lifetime.”
Weitai Sun ( Jr.), a UHS football player, said, “I’m really glad we got a stadium, and I think it would benefit the morale of our school during home games.”
Janelle Vo (Sr.) said, “As an ASB member, I got to go to the field during halftime and meet up with the Woodbridge ASB. We all cheered together and listened to Terry Walker. It was great seeing the IUSD schools come together.”
