Dr. Gavin Huntley-Fenner, a member of the IUSD Board of Education, has decided to step down effective November 21, due to the growth of his private business, Huntley-Fenner Advisors. Huntley-Fenner has been on the board since 2005 and served as the 2013 Board president.
“It is not related to dissatisfaction with my fellow governing team members or the Irvine Unified staff,” stated Huntley-Fenner on his official letter of resignation. “Many of you will recognize that I have always aspired to be a highly visible and hands-on leader. Recently, with the growth of my business and ongoing demands at home, I find that I am unable to sustain the level of engagement Irvine Unified deserves while continuing to meet my other obligations.”
Huntley-Fenner is a managing consultant with Huntley-Fenner Advisors, a science and engineering consulting firm. He is one of the founding members of the Irvine Education Partnership Fund Committee and served on the Irvine Public Schools Foundation Executive Board prior to joining the IUSD board.
One of Huntley-Fenner’s biggest projects was the new stadium built at University High School. Despite a lawsuit from the City of Irvine, Huntley-Fenner still pushed the IUSD Board of Education to carry on with the $8.5 million project. Eventually, the lawsuit was dropped.
In response to his resignation, the IUSD board members have voted unanimously to fill the vacancy by appointing a temporary member. This appointee will assume all duties of Huntley-Fenner and will serve until the next scheduled election on November 4.
In The Liberal OC, journalist Dan Chmielewski said, “Gavin is an asset to Irvine and has been instrumental in maintaining the excellence IUSD schools are known for across the county and across the state. While he’ll be leaving elected office, he certainly isn’t going away.”
