Girls Varsity Tennis defeated Campbell Hall in their third round of CIF with the score of 9-9 in sets, winning 76-73 games on Monday, November 6. The team will now advance to CIF Semifinals and have qualified to compete at Regionals.
Even though the girls lost to Campbell Hall 9-9 earlier in the season, with one of Campbell Hall’s key players missing, they were able to redeem themselves with a win.
Campbell Hall had improved their doubles lineup, but were still unable to prevail. The singles players did well with Cami Brown (So.) defeating the second and third ranked players from Campbell, sweeping both with a score of 6-0. Dana Feng (Jr.) lost a close match against the second ranked player with a score of 6-7. All of Brown and Feng’s matches were important in getting needed games.
All three singles players swept Campbell Hall’s number three singles player, with Kamar Alajeely (Jr.) securing the ninth and final set. The doubles teams secured five out of the nine sets. Struggling at first, Mya Wang (Fr.) and Emily Markus (Fr.) were down 1-4, but they fought through and came back with a 7-5 win against Campbell Hall’s top doubles team. Wang and Markus also placed third in the Pacific Coast League Individuals.
Although all three of University’s teams lost against Campbell Hall’s second ranked doubles team, they were able to secure enough games to win in the end.
The team has qualified for Regionals and will advance to the semifinals. This is the second year in a row that Girls Tennis has qualified for the Regional tournament. “I think what allowed us to advance to the semifinals was not only our amazing play against second seed Campbell Hall, but also the spirit and everyone who came to support,” Wang said. “It wasn’t only tennis people that came to support. At least for me, the cheering and great spirit is what determined me to win.”
The team is set to play Peninsula next at an away game in the Semifinals and will participate in the regional tournament on Friday, November 10 and Saturday, November 11.
