Girls Lacrosse dominated against Irvine High School, winning with a score of 18-3 on Wednesday, April 18.
Getting off to a strong start, the team scored ten points in the first half, while Irvine only scored two. They followed up that half by outscoring the Vaqueros 8-1 in the second half. This was the team’s strongest performance of the season, as they scored the most points they have scored in a game this season, as well as allowing the least points they have this season, helping them to have their largest margin of victory of the season.
The win all but secures the team’s berth in CIF. Last year was the first CIF for the Girls Lacrosse program, and they have continued their momentum from last year to jump to a 6-2 league record. Last year, their league record was 6-4.
Girls Lacrosse also defeated CdM on Monday for the first time in years, and defeated Dana Hills at home on Friday, April 13.
Senior defense Co-Captain Molly Pirus reflected on the team’s performance. “We have the potential; we just really need to put our minds to it,” Pirus said. “I think as a team overall we played our best. There are small things here and there like ground balls or transitioning from defense to offense but overall we played well and spirits were high the whole game.”
Senior Olivia Holmes described CdM as a difficult opponent. “Corona del Mar was a very aggressive team who did not like losing at all,” Holmes said. “However, we matched their intensity with our own, which led to almost everyone on the attacking part of our team scoring at least one goal.”
Pirus pointed out the significance of the game. “This has really shown us that our team has improved significantly compared to years past. Compared to other years, this game we made them work their hardest and to be honest I’m so so so proud of my girls for showing them that we are not an easy team to beat anymore.”
