Boys Water Polo shows dominance in GOW win
September 19, 2018
Boys Water Polo is building up momentum heading towards league, with a dominant 25-3 win over Marina High School. Serving as the GOW on Tuesday, September 11, the win gives the Trojans a 4-1 record in pre-season.
Coach Jesse Briggs was pleased with the team’s performance, especially with the added pressure of being the GOW.
“I thought our team played real strong yesterday and it’s great that was the game of the week and they came out and played really high energy,” Briggs said.
With a large crowd coming out to support, the game went well from start to finish, as the Trojans were ahead by 8-1 after the first quarter. They continued their spectacular performance throughout the whole game, scoring at least five goals in every quarter while conceding no more than one.
Many members of the team thought very highly of their performance, as Wallin believed that the team performed well.
“We never gave up, even though it was 10-1,” sophomore Matthew Wallin said.
The team played well in multiple aspects to come out with the 22 point victory.
“Well, we shot better than we were, we played good defense, and we were running our offense a little bit better and getting better at it,” Briggs said.
Briggs was happy with the performances of many players against Marina and in the previous games.
“Last game we had overall contributions from everybody. We have a very talented sophomore class that is carrying the team, and our senior goalie is doing a really good job,” Briggs said.
Leading the way on the goal scoring front were sophomores Stewart Campbell and Wallin with five and six goals respectively. Freshman Victor Martin and junior Tucker Blum also added three goals each.
Briggs believes the team is ready for the upcoming season and has high goals for the upcoming league games.
“We just gotta keep working hard… our main goal is to try to qualify for CIF this year; that’s what our seniors’ goals are and that’s what we are shooting for,” Briggs said.
The Boys Water Polo CIF journey will start on September 20, with their first league game against Northwood.
