Boys Soccer defeated San Juan Hills in a non-conference game 6-3 at home field on Tuesday, December 4, 2018. The team lost to Godinez 4-1 in the previous game, but hoped to redeem that loss in this game.
However, when the score at halftime was 2-3 San Juan Hills, the players knew that the game would be a struggle.
“What I admire most about us was our ability to stay unified as a team even when we went down 3-2 early in the second half to be able to run the game around and win 6-3,” senior Giorgio Conta said.
Conta, a midfielder, had a solid game with 2 assists. A notable loss in the team’s defense this game was sophomore Nicola Conta, brother to Giorgio Conta, who was injured in an earlier game against against Cypress. He will be out for the rest of the season.
“Getting injured has been has been really difficult,” Nicola Conta said. “It hurts to watch the games on the sidelines and not be able to do anything.”
Though team injuries may not be the reason, Boys soccer has let in seven goals, which is equal to how many goals soccer let in last year’s season. It could be due to Boys soccer being moved up to Division 1, meaning the team will play much better teams, after winning CIF last year.
“With the entire back line graduating we’ve had to make major adjustments in the roster but I believe that we are still a very competitive team in Division one,” Giorgio Conta said.
So far, soccer is 4-1-1 after losing to Godinez and tieing rival Woodbridge.
‘We haven’t done so well in the past few games, but I have a lot of hope for this season and I believe that we could make it to CIF this year,” sophomore Andrew Jang said. “We just need to prove ourselves and reach our full potential in the upcoming games.”
Boys soccer’s next game will be against Lakewood on December 10 at home.
