The University High School (UHS) girls soccer team played its first league game against its rivaling team from Woodbridge High School on Thursday, January 9. Chloe Hemingway (Sr.), Shantae Elam (Sr.), Sofya Ogunseitan (So.) and Kiana Gharmari (Fr.) scored for the Trojans, but unfortunately the team struggled on defense. In the end, the girls were not able to seal the win, ending their home game with a score of 4-4.
Hanna Ghamari (Jr.) said, “We were in control of most of the game and towards the end Woodbridge launched two shots that we weren’t prepared for. We weren’t happy with a tie, unlike Woodbridge. We should have easily won that game, but we will definitely beat them next time.”
UHS played their second game the following Tuesday, January14, against the Beckman High School (BHS). The team started out very powerful, ending the first half tied at 2-2. A power outage occurred during the second half of the game, forcing the players to stop playing for about 15 minutes. The sudden halt in the middle of the game caused UHS to lose momentum, ending the gamewith a loss to BHS (5-3).
Hemingway and Reema Bzeih (Sr.) have both been recruited to play soccer for University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) as college freshmen next year. The UCLA girls soccer team recently won the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) women’s soccer title.
On Thursday, January 16, the girls played their third league game against Corona Del Mar at the UHS Stadium. They defeated the Sea Kings by a score of 2-0 with goals from Sierra Winder (Sr.) and Ogunseitan.
The Girls currently have an even league record of 1-1-1 and play their next game against Northwood High School at Tustin High School on Tuesday, January 21.
