Girls Soccer lost against Corona del Mar High School 5-2 on January 9. This is their third loss of the season.
The team is critical about their performance. “A loss against CdM obviously wasn’t the outcome we wanted,” Co-Captain senior Leyna Wood said. “It’s hard to play the way we play against a team who just kicks the ball up the field, but we did exactly what we were supposed to. For the next game, we need to get better at defending set plays and clearing balls out of our box.”
Co-Captain senior Emma Goolsby is pleased with the team’s performance. “Today’s game was significant because we played our greatest rival,” Goolsby said. “I thought we outplayed them by far even though we did lose. We definitely played strong and aggressively. As a team, I think we were very cohesive and had good team chemistry. I hope we can improve on our finishing and keep up our aggressive attitude.”
Senior player Mackenzie Stapinski agrees with Goolsby’s characterization of the game and is surprised about the outcome. “I think the most surprising thing of the game was that we didn’t win,” Stapinski said. “We outplayed them most of the game. Most of our game plan went the way that we wanted it to and that was why it was so surprising that we hadn’t won. Next time we plan to play the same way that we have been playing for most of the season and hope for a better result.”
The team’s next game was against Northwood High School on January 11 which they won 2-0.
