On Tuesday, December 17, the choir department held their annual winter concert. Performers included the University High School Choir, Concert Chorale and Madrigals under the direction of Mr. Justin Olvey (Visual and Performing Arts Dept.) and two student run a cappella choirs: the Footnotes and Undertones. In addition the singers were accompanied by Brianna Nguyen (So.) and Danica Silan (So.) on piano.
The concert lasted about an hour and forty minutes, including a fifteen-minute intermission. The concert included well-known Christmas songs such as “A Doo-Wop Christmas” by Kirby Shaw, “Carol of the Bells” by Mykola Leontovych and “Christmas in about Three Minutes” by Mark Weston. Christmas in about Three Minutes, performed by Madrigals, was personally, my favorite part.
In addition to the choirs, soloists performed throughout the show. Corinne Alsop (Fr.) performed “Windy Nights” while Layla Bina (Sr.) performed “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” “Windy Nights” was more of a cheerful song played by guitar in contrast to “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Both soloists did an incredible job. Layla Bina, especially, performed the song with a strong voice and powerful emotions.
Ronnie Crocco (Sr.) said, “All the singers blew my mind. It was an incredible performance by all of them.”
Overall, the winter choir concert was a great success. It was wisely directed and each song was appropriately picked for each group and genre. Furthermore, all the singers showed great deal of emotion and enthusiasm while using their beautiful and unique voices.
