After many hours of brainstorming and planning, the UHS Associated Student Body hosted its very first Tailgate Pool Party before the home game against Portola High School on Aug. 25. Students who attended the party dressed in their pool party attire, such as swimsuits and goggles, claimed free food.
The tailgate required a careful planning process involving both UHS ASB and Student Council members.
“We set up pool decorations and fun games to lighten up the atmosphere,” Junior Class Vice President Ally Kim said. “We also made and hung posters for the football game later on the day.”
The Tailgate Pool Party marked the beginning of a new Trojan tradition. In previous years, UHS ASB instead opted for a Back-to-School dance.
“I personally really liked the new tailgate that replaced the Back-to-School dance because of the games, DJ and free food,” Kim said. “I hope we can continue this as a tradition!”
Other than the special highlights of the Tailgate Pool Party, various activities, food and games were provided.
“Foosball tables were set up, music was provided by a DJ and a bubble machine filled the area with bubbles,” Junior Council member Sophia Whyel said. “Other basic activities such as beach balls for playing ball and corn hole were provided as well to add more fun.”
The tailgate won the participation of many students from each class.
“The tailgate had lots of school participation throughout ASB and also Student Council, but I would like to see more non-council people be involved as well,” Junior Class Vice President Chloe Tsai said.
Despite the wide range of activities and games offered at the tailgate, some students reported that they would like to see more options available to them.
“I wish the event had even more activities, as people began to show up, there weren’t many activities available,” Whyel said. “It would’ve been fun if the activities were more pool-related, as the football game theme was a pool party. However, I still had a great time at the tailgate.”
ASB was satisfied with students attending the Tailgate Pool Party and being immersed in a welcoming school spirit.
“The most rewarding part was being able to see students have fun with their friends while playing games and eating,” Tsai said. “It was a good way to help UNI students get their minds off of the stress of high school.”
Overall, many expressed their satisfaction with the event and agreed that it was a phenomenal way to start the school year.
