The Comedy Sportz Kick-Off Match was an immersive and unforgettable experience for the students of UHS. The palpable energy from the moment the players were introduced permeated throughout the night without a single dull moment.

Upon entering the main theater, it was immediately apparent that there was a marginal amount of students compared to football games or other large school events. Comedy Sportz appeals to a more niche audience, consisting of both parents and students looking for a laugh. 

A Comedy Sportz game always begins with a warm-up round where an impromptu speech is given to the audience. Then, other members try to replace the speaker by comically attacking their facts. After the opening act, the two main teams enter the stage, where they compete head-to-head in team and individual challenges. There is a brief intermission about halfway through the event where audience members can purchase snacks and drinks to support the arts. The entire event is approximately three to four hours, comparable to a UHS football game.

Comedy Sportz received new members this year, including three new freshmen who look forward to a year on the stage. 

“[The match was] totally [nerve racking], but you just gotta learn to turn that into energy,” freshman Sarah Almanza said. “I’m probably going to sell my soul to Comedy Sportz . . . these people are great, they’re funny and they’re just fun to be around. In sports, it’s a lot more competition-based, and in Comedy Sportz, it’s more fun-based.”

The new freshman hopes to lead the Comedy Sportz team for years to come and to spread laughs to her fellow students.

All things considered, Comedy Sportz is an event you should experience at least once throughout your career as a UHS student. Many future events are scheduled to take place throughout the year with various games and themes, with the next show scheduled for early November. Comedy Sportz is truly unlike anything else on campus, and the sheer amount of audience participation can immerse its viewers even further.
