On Sept. 14, in their fifth game of the season, the UHS Trojans beat Savanna with a final score of 44-0 for their third consecutive win, the longest win streak since 2017.
The Trojans started off extremely strong, scoring 37 points in the first half with two receiving touchdowns and a pick-six from senior Blaine Anderson. Seniors Luke Edwards and Jonathan Soto both had receiving touchdowns as well. Soto also had a safety with an assist from senior Lex Hackett to round out the scoring for the first half.
UHS would go on to score another touchdown on a fumble recovery from senior Eithar Takesh to seal the game as a 44-0 victory.
Senior quarterback Koa Saito, threw for 218 yards in the game and four touchdowns, boasting a ten-touchdown total in his last two games.
“I thought it was an excellent victory, we all came together as a team and had our moments where we all clicked,” Saito said. “It was a great environment whenever we scored with everyone hyping each other up, in both big and small moments. We were really acting like a family.”
Saito also pointed out the performance of Anderson in the game, who was only one touchdown short of a triple crown, scoring a touchdown for the offense, defense and special teams.
This victory marks the Trojans’ third consecutive win after losing two straight to start the season. This evident shift in performance marks a huge step towards the team’s goal of making CIF.
“We had to fix some things and some [things] we did wrong, and I think we did that,” Head Coach Vincent Mesa said. “We got our stuff down, and that is what the difference is in these last few victories.”
Now 3-3 in the season after losing to the reigning state champions, Laguna Hills, the Trojans will enter their next game with more confidence and momentum than ever before in what is sure to be a tough matchup.
“We [have] to come in to practice all four days and work as hard as possible,” Mesa said. “They’re a good team and we really have to take the little things seriously.”
University’s next game is an away game on Oct. 4 against Northwood High School, who currently have a 2-4 record.
