On Oct.13, UHS ASB hosted Club Kickoff on the basketball courts. Sixty-four clubs sold items to students. The event allowed clubs to obtain funding, spread their publicity and showcase their hard work.
For many clubs, a successful Club Kickoff can be a huge boost in their funding for projects or materials. However, it can be difficult to succeed amid the competition for the clubs selling common items, such as boba or In-N-Out. At the event, nine clubs sold boba while seven clubs sold In-N-Out.
“We were not very successful since boba was being sold by a variety of clubs, so it was difficult to compete,” Architectural Science, History, Art Club Co-President Kevin Choi said.
For some, the solution to this problem was to sell things distinctly unique to their club. Eco Club sold succulents, Gender Sexuality Alliance sold pride flags and Dungeons and Dragons Club sold dice and D&D books. By selling these items, these clubs combined their passion with the products they sell, enriching both the seller’s and the buyer’s experience.
While many clubs rely on Club Kickoff for fundraising, other clubs also utilize this event for publicity.
“Our main goal this year was to further advertise our club,” Crochet for Care Club President Selena Wang said. “Especially since crocheting keychains takes a lot of time, these interactions mean more than the money they raise from them.”
The UHS Psychology Club used Club Kickoff to understand how psychologists collect data. Instead of selling products, they gave out free candy and asked people to fill out a survey about dreams.
“Our first project showed one of the ways psychologists can conduct research for the theory they want to explore,” Psychology Club Co-President Karen Tan said. “The main idea was not what we were asking questions about, it was conducting research.”
Club Kickoff serves as a fun annual activity that allows students to appreciate the hard work of clubs. Students were immersed in an uplifting atmosphere that promoted publicity and organization for clubs.
