The UHS Girls’ Varsity Tennis team won their rivalry game on Oct. 12 against Woodbridge High School with a final score of 11-7. Even though the game was technically another league game, the long-time rivalry between UHS and Woodbridge increased the stakes. All of UHS’s fall sports teams have had recent, heated encounters with our rivals and the girls’ tennis team was no exception.
“All the girls played amazing, especially with one of our players missing, we were still able to win with a missing starter,” Senior Captain Ava Bocek said.
The UHS team displayed a diverse set of skills, such as cross-court hits to Woodbridge. However, Woodbridge showed the same level of skill, with more than half of the matches going to a tiebreaker.
The intense back-and-forth of the matches left the crowd in awe as they watched in silence to respect the ongoing rallies. Bocek and her partner, Maya Sentil, got their revenge on Woodbridge’s best doubles team by winning six sets to one. Previously they lost a five to seven set. Senior Captain Anna Gubin beat Woodbridge’s best singles player in an exciting tiebreaker to help seal the game.
“For next time, I think doubles needs to work on attacking more at the net and working on the consistency of our serves so we don’t lose free points,” Bocek said. “A lot of their players weren’t strong so being more aggressive would have definitely made for a better outcome.”
In the end, UHS fought till the very end in all of its matches and used its superior technique to come out on top in this thrilling rivalry game.
