Irene Kim, a highly skilled artist, has been nominated for November Artist of the Month. In observing her work, one cannot help but recognize her undeniable talent and creative ideas. Her inspiration is also genuinely intriguing, possessing a unique motivation for pursuing art in the first place.
Kim’s exposure to art began at the age of three or four as her entire family consists of painters, resulting in the constant presence of artwork. Being immersed in fine arts throughout her upbringing, it is unsurprising that she developed a personal fascination with the domain. Kim’s older sister previously studied art at UHS and is a key point of inspiration.
“[Her experience] made me want to follow in her footsteps,” Kim said.
Kim’s artistic inspiration stems from current events and her ancestral tradition, serving as the foundation for her achievements as an artist. Artistic success is often attained by artists who discover a means of self-expression through their artwork. Demonstrating one’s personality through a creative embrace is outstanding in various aspects.
“[I draw inspiration] from my family, people I talk to daily, or even the morning news,” Kim said. “I express and advocate for myself and others through my art.”
Kim aims to delineate artistic accomplishment by ensuring her work is accessible and captivating for her audience. Through her experience at UHS, she’s learned from Ms. Ibrahim, her art teacher, for three years.
“Her class has been one of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered,” Kim said. “She lets me make my own creative decisions and supports me in achieving them. I’ve improved my technical skills, but I believe she’s helped me become more sophisticated in my work.”
Kim’s artistic journey, rooted in her family, has helped her develop into the artist she is today. Her profound commitment to meaningful expression, drawing inspiration from personal experience and contemporary events, distinguishes her work beyond a more technical skill. Guided by the influence of her older sister and the supportive environment fostered by Ms. Ibrahim, Irene Kim not only showcases improved painting techniques but also reflects a sophisticated and nuanced artistic style.
