On Nov. 17, UHS ASB hosted its second annual Student versus Staff Basketball Game. Hundreds of students packed the main gym as they prepared to watch their favorite teachers compete.
Around 10 students and 15 staff members were suited for the game. The staff’s star-studded roster included Ms. Smith and Mr. McBride, while senior Jai Williams and Joaquin Franklin were some of the athletes included in the student roster.
“It was really fun playing against my football coach, Mr. Mcbride,” Williams said. “I feel like there was a really good turnout of people watching but I feel like there should’ve been a skill requirement to join the squad.”
Also on the court were senior Mark Kim as referee and seniors Alec Apelian and Ayden Agahi commentating.
“I’m glad I got no criticism for reffing the game,” Kim said. “It was a memorable experience and I’m sure the student body enjoyed watching.”
Unfortunately, those on the UHS basketball team were not allowed to play in this event, leveling the playing field between the teams. The teachers took advantage of this, taking an early lead in the first quarter.
After substitution, the students came back to nearly tie the game but the return of history teacher Mr. McBride put a wrap to the game, with a score of 33 to 13, teachers.
“Going against my current students and players that I’ve coached was awesome and it felt really good to post up on them,” Mr. Mcbride said.
Although ASB tried to maintain an equal balance between male and female participants, there was a clear distinction in the number of players between the two genders.
“It was a really exciting event to watch, however, I do wish more girls participated in the game,” senior Ava Kendall said.
While most of the students had limited basketball experience, the teachers on the other hand were well prepared for the match. For the past couple of years, staff members at UHS have been playing pick-up basketball early every Friday morning, which uncoincidentally aided them in the competition.
The Student versus Staff Basketball Game built an overall comradery at UHS, bridging the gap between teachers and students. This event signifies one of the many student activities that the Trojan Army can look forward to annually.
