The UHS Comedy Sportz League showcased fantastic performances once again in their Comedy Sportz Charity match, the third match of the year. The match was especially unique, with UHS alumni returning to compete against the current UHS Comedy Sportz League. The lighthearted and humorous experience of both the alumnus and the current league filled the theater with laughter.
The Comedy Sportz Match began with the introduction of both the alumnus team and the current team. Throughout the match, captains on each team challenged each other to both solo and team games, all featuring elaborate, charming and witty performances. Though the entirety of the event spanned approximately two to three hours, the intermission midway through and the genuine enthusiasm throughout the match diminished any sense of lengthiness.
The most distinctive attribute of this event was the intimate atmosphere. The referee narrowed the boundaries between the audience and the stage by taking suggestions from multiple members of the audience, demonstrating an unconventional value and appreciation for all attendees. Such interactiveness encouraged the audience to participate with the players, allowing everybody to contribute to the overall experience. The number of opportunities to engage as an audience member is foreign to any other musical, play or sporting event at UHS.
This match was especially enjoyable due to the presence of an alumni team and the chemistry between all players.
“This experience was great and I love being back here at Uni,” alumni Natalia Montano said. “I love my Uni people and love seeing them after college . . . the talent just keeps rising here.”
The interactive and passionate elements of this match also highlighted how underappreciated live theater is as an art. Many in the theater program, including seniors and this match’s team captain, Sierra Wheaton, encourage the live theater experience.
“By joining the theater program, you meet new people who become your friends and gain loads of opportunities,” Wheaton said.
Overall, the UHS Comedy Sportz Charity Match was a wholesome, hilarious and surprisingly enticing event. Aside from the comedic aspects of each match, the impressive talent of each performer is alluring to watch. Amongst the numerous matches scheduled in the future, it is highly recommended to attend at least one. Live theater provides a warm and exhilarating journey that few other events offer.
