Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, ASB’s elected seven have done an outstanding job in their respective roles: Varin Gupta as President, Ryan Shrivastava as Vice President, Alec Apelian as SAC, Ayden Agahi as Spirit and Rally Commissioner, Riley Hertstein as Girls’ Sports Commissioner, Either Takesh as Boys’ Sports Commissioner and Bruno Rodriguez Diaz as Clubs Commissioner.
While these seven have certainly done an outstanding job, the school year is coming to a steady close. Because six of the elected seven are current seniors (apart from Rodriguez Diaz), UHS needs new leaders for the 2024-25 Associated Student Body (ASB).
The 33rd annual Election Convention will be held on Friday, Mar. 15, which is a minimum day. New candidates will arise, hoping to secure a position in ASB and become more involved in specific school activities.
This democratic delegate selection process intends to ensure transparency and fairness in the selection of new ASB leaders. Based on the delegate’s responses to the questions, students will vote, therefore having a sense of ownership.
Looking ahead to the 2024-25 academic school year, the selection committee, a group of students nominated from each Homeroom, will select new leaders for ASB to maintain the positive synergy within the student body and also spread a sense of community throughout UHS.
Similar to last year’s election convention, candidates will be asked multiple rounds of impromptu questions, in which they each will have 30 to 45 seconds to answer (45 seconds for the first round and 30 seconds for each consequent round). After each round of questions (when each candidate running for the position has answered), voting will commence.
Each student in the selection committee will be using a device such as a school Chromebook to vote, provided by members of the Senior Council. During each period of voting, students will access a link provided by ASB and vote for one candidate in the position that finished answering.
If a majority is not met by the first round, a small break is given to the candidates where more questions will be asked. The same process occurs, but this time candidates have 30 seconds to answer the question. After all candidates running for a certain position answer, students from the selection committee will cast their vote for a delegate.
This process repeats until a majority has been met, meaning that a candidate has received the majority of votes for their position. At this point, candidates for other positions come onto the stage and the full procedure of question-asking and voting begins again.
Like last year, the most likely order of positions will go as follows: Students Activities Coordinator (SAC), Spirit and Rally Commissioner, Girls’ Sports Commissioner, Boys’ Sports Commissioner, Club’s Commissioner, Vice President and President.
As the 33rd annual Election Convention approaches, anticipation builds among the students for the emergence of new leaders who will continue to uphold the values and traditions of UHS. The democratic delegate selection process stands as a testament to UHS’s commitment to student leadership, empowerment and excellence.
