Next year, UHS may offer a new art elective for students. The Art of Fashion class allows students to learn basic fashion concepts through hands-on projects and coursework. As a yearlong course, it would fulfill the Fine Arts credit required to graduate.
“I thought it would be a fun class,” junior Maritza Guzman said. “It is a new course for students and it teaches something that currently I don’t know anything about.”
The new elective provides a new experience for students to learn about basic fashion terminology, textiles and fibers and garment styles. For those who wish to pursue fashion as a career, the course also offers basic fashion and business concepts, retail merchandising categories, design and production of apparel, retail business fundamentals and fashion promotion. This could be very beneficial to students who are interested in the field of fashion because it may give them an insight into what that field entails.
“I think that it is super cool that [the school] is willing to offer this course,” Ms. Sparks said. “Fashion is important because it could become a career choice for some students.”
The course offers students a more interactive and conceptual experience in fashion allowing them to gain knowledge on a career choice that is available to them. The class is different from other art and design classes because it teaches students design fundamentals in addition to the impact fashion has on society.
“I’ve always had an interest in fashion,” junior Maiya Petros said. “I’ve sketched my own designs before but I’ve never known if I am doing it correctly or how to carry on. I definitely think students should join. I believe it would be a fun learning experience.”
In addition to clubs like Fashion with a Passion, the elective would be another way for students to learn and explore their interests. Especially since fashion plays such a fundamental part in society throughout time, it could be a unique experience; this would be the first time the course is offered at UHS.
The Art of Fashion elective will be offered next year only if there are enough people interested in the new course. For more information, see Ms. Sparks in room 409 and add your name to the interest list. If you are interested, sign up for the class as your top choice for your 2024-2025 elective.
