When “Dune” first hit theaters in 2021, it left audiences mesmerized with its stunning visuals, intense narrative and captivating plot. As a fan of both science fiction and action-adventure movies, I approached “Dune 2” with high hopes considering the remarkable job done with the previous film.
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, “Dune 2” continues the adaptation of the iconic novel by Frank Herbert and follows the story of Paul Atreides, portrayed by Timothée Chalamet. After joining the Fremen people of the desert planet Arrakis, Chalament takes part in a war against House Harkonnen, a sinister organization that stole natural resources from the Fremen.
The effects in “Dune 2” are nothing short of spectacular, showcasing the technological prowess of modern filmmaking. From the ginormous 400-meter-tall monstrous sandworms to the terrain of the desert planet, “Dune 2” displays spectacular attention to detail in its scenes, made possible by the effective use of its 190 million dollar budget.
Before the film’s release, an unavoidable issue was presented – the novel’s time jump. In the original novel’s timeline, a time jump takes place between the first two novels. However, as a result of the film’s release being delayed from November of 2023 to March of 2024, an accidental solution for the issue was created.
While “Dune 2” withholds a remarkably strong plot, it does come with its complications. The series’ long and complex storyline causes much confusion for any who have not read the novels or seen the previous film. For this reason, I would recommend people watch the “Dune” (2021) film in advance of “Dune 2” to have a better understanding of the series plot.
Overall, “Dune 2” exceeded my expectations, and despite the considerable length of the film, 2 hours and 46 minutes to be exact, the immense storytelling and breathtaking visuals created a memorable cinematic experience. I recommend this movie to anyone who enjoyed the previous film, as well as any fans of the original novels.
