The UHS Varsity Softball team kicked off their 2024 season with an impressive win against Samueli Academy on Feb. 29. With a final score of 13-1, the Trojans showcased their dominance on the field, marking a promising beginning for what looks to be a remarkable season ahead.
Led by Head Coach Juan Meneses and Assistant Coach Merissa Guzman, the game was more than just a win on the scoreboard; it was a story of resilience, teamwork and unwavering determination. In interviews with key players and coaches, it became clear that this victory was the culmination of months of hard work and dedication.
Gidget Smith, a pivotal player in the match, emphasized the importance of positivity and communication within the team. As the team’s catcher, her role extends beyond just defense; she serves as a vocal leader, guiding her peers through every play and ensuring cohesion on the field.
“Everyone was hearing each other and being super positive,” Smith said. “We were communicating throughout the whole game, knowing where the next play was [going to] be. I think that ultimately, everyone played really well and put their best out there.”
Another standout player, Carson Cruz highlighted the team’s improved chemistry and defensive prowess.
“I think we definitely improved on defense,” Cruz said. “And again, I think we just worked together. We’re building our chemistry, which is always better when we’re working together.”
Donya Zomani, a newcomer to the team, echoed sentiments of unity and support from her teammates. Despite being in her first year, she demonstrated remarkable composure and adaptability, a testament to the team’s culture of mentorship and collaboration.
“I think that I learned how to keep myself calm in the game,” Zomani said. “And just that if everyone works well together, everything will work smoothly. With everyone’s effort, everything will be fine.”
This win was not just about the immediate victory but about setting the tone for the rest of the season and beyond. With a roster brimming with talent and guided by dedicated coaches, the UHS Varsity Softball team is poised to make waves throughout the rest of the year.
“This win is just the beginning,” Guzman said. “We’re building something special here and the best is yet to come.”
