Amidst the grandeur of the Model United Nations of the University of Chicago (MUNUC) conference, UHS Model United Nations (MUN) delegates distinguished themselves among over 3,000 participants from around the world. MUNUC, established in 1988, is renowned as one of the premier Model United Nations conferences globally. The conference attracts high school students eager to engage in rigorous debates and simulations of international diplomacy.
This year, UHS delegates made their mark at MUNUC. Juniors Bruno Rodriguez Diaz, Benny Tsabba and Joshua Hsi received a Commendation. Senior Kerry Zhang and junior Sarina Rabiee were recognized with Outstanding, while senior Julia Murdock, junior Claire Wen and junior Christopher Burke earned the highest honor of Best Delegate.
MUNUC’s annual four-day conference, held at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, offers diverse committees and topics, ranging from the Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) to specialized simulations of historical events like the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). With over 31 committees, MUNUC provides participants with immersive experiences that foster critical thinking, collaboration and leadership skills.
The conference provides background guides to make complex world issues accessible. Additionally, crisis elements are integrated into simulations to create dynamic and responsive committees, challenging delegates to improvise and adapt to changing circumstances. Continuous feedback during conferences further enhances the learning experience, empowering students to gain confidence and take risks in their advocacy.
UHS MUN delegates reflected on their journeys in the activity and their progress in improving their public speaking skills.
“[My sister] has been encouraging me since freshman year to pursue things I’m interested in, including international politics,” Rabiee said. “MUN is such a good opportunity to get your ideas heard and to hear other perspectives and grow as a person and I think having that space to discuss and to go back and forth was something I really wanted freshman year.”
These achievements reflect the talent and hard work of UHS MUN delegates and the robust support and guidance provided by the UHS MUN program. As UHS MUN delegates continue to excel, they embody the school’s commitment to academic excellence, leadership development and global citizenship. Their accomplishments serve as a source of pride and inspiration for the entire UHS community to strive for excellence.
