As the first few weeks of school have concluded, UHS kicked off the new school year with its first pep rally on Aug. 23. The event showcased varsity sports teams, cheer performances and the introduction of new Associated Student Body (ASB) members. This year’s rally also featured a special welcome for the new principal.
The pep rally started with the presentation of ASB’s Sports Commissioners. This year’s Girls’ Sports Commissioner is senior Asha Highsmith. Highsmith shared her experience at her first pep rally as a Sports Commissioner, reflecting on the moments leading up to her debut at the rally.
“At the first pep rally, I remember feeling excited for my first appearance but also nervous about remembering everything I wanted to say,” Highsmith said. “I also wanted to make sure everyone watching would be engaged and excited for the fall.”
Also introduced at the rally was this year’s Student Activities Coordinator (SAC), senior Tak Nishida. As the SAC, Nishida oversees all campus activities, clubs and school events. Nishida spent the past few years preparing for this position, learning from previous SACs and developing the skills necessary to take on the role’s responsibilities.
“From observing the past SACs and being a student these past three years, my main goals are building community and companionship through games and other experiences that bridge the different groups on campus,” Nishida said.
Lastly, the pep rally highlighted UHS’ Principal, Mr. Michael Georgino. While this is not Georgino’s first year being a part of the UHS community, one of his first experiences back was attending the pep rally and seeing the new traditions and cheers.
“I felt gratitude as it was the first time I was able to present myself to the entire school community,” Georgino said.“The welcome I received and the respect I was given made me feel gratitude for our students, staff and the opportunity to be a part of the UHS community.”
For many, the opening pep rally set the tone for an exciting and memorable school year at UHS. From lively cheer chants to fun student activities, the event showcased the spirit and unity of the school community.
