The UHS Trojans faced off against the Northwood Timberwolves in a highly anticipated home flag football game on Monday, Sept. 9. The team fought hard until the end. Still, it could not defeat the Timberwolves, losing 18-0.
The Trojans conceded an early touchdown four minutes into the game, but both sides showcased solid defense for the rest of the first half. However, just before halftime, the Timberwolves scored their second touchdown. Six minutes into the second half, Northwood’s quarterback completed another 30-plus-yard throw, resulting in their third touchdown.
“In the first half, in my opinion, it should have been a 6-6 score instead of a 12-0; we let up a late touchdown,” Head Coach Jeff Marchiorlatti said. “The job that we needed to do when we came out of the half was [to] get momentum on our side, and we didn’t.”
Despite the tough loss, Marchiorlatti remained optimistic about the team’s performance.
“That team is the top team in the PCL [Pacific Coast League] right now,” Marchiorlatti said. “Our goal was to keep the game tight and give ourselves a chance, and we did.”
The team plans to learn as much as possible from this loss to improve on their mistakes and as a team for the rest of the season.
“I think our defense is going to learn from this game a lot when we watch film and really make sure we are locking down the deep routes,” Elyse Mills said. “We’re going to improve because we will practice a lot.”
On the offensive side, Carson Cruz believes they will be able to change their approach.
“I think on offense we’ll learn a lot on reading the defense . . . and running the correct routes,” Cruz said.
With the PCL title still in sight, the Trojans will now look to approach the rest of the season one step at a time.
University’s next game is away against Rosemary Academy on Oct. 3.
