“Deadpool & Wolverine,” directed by Shawn Levy, was released on July 26. It is the third addition to the highly acclaimed Deadpool film series and the tenth movie featuring the return of the fan-favorite character Wolverine.
The movie follows Deadpool, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, as he navigates the multiverse in hopes of saving his quickly deteriorating timeline. This film features many fan-favorite characters returning to the big screen, beginning with a variant of Wolverine, portrayed by Hugh Jackman.
Jackman’s first portrayal of Wolverine since the 2017 film “Logan” released, which was believed to be the conclusion of the character’s story, has been awaited since the film’s first teaser trailer was released in February of this year. The return of the well-loved character was, as expected, received incredibly positively, especially regarding his pairing with another fan-favorite, Deadpool.
The fact that Deadpool would be put together with Wolverine was such a highly anticipated pairing due to the contrasting nature of the characters. Deadpool’s humor and chaos, which caused nature to clash with Wolverine’s serious and stoic personality, gave great potential for a fantastic movie packed with comedy and action.
Aside from the overall plot, the film also featured several well-loved characters such as Johnny Storm, played by Chris Evans; Blade, played by Wesley Snipes; Gambit, played by Channing Tatum; Elektra, played by Jennifer Garner and Sabretooth, played by Tyler Mane. Even actor Henry Cavill made a cameo at one point in the film.
With such a vast group of talented actors portraying beloved characters that have not been shown on the big screen, their reveal added a significant layer of excitement about how they would impact the story. This film perfectly captures each character uniquely, giving them impactful scenes without derailing from the original plot.
Aside from the excitement generated by the inclusion of so many well-loved characters, the film is full of action-packed and humorous scenes. Deadpool is a character well known for his numerous fourth wall breaks, where he speaks directly to the audience. This film does not shy away from this aspect, displayed in both Deadpool movies. The comedy aspect of this film is done well, providing funny scenes and commentary, going as far as Deadpool taking a dig at Marvel Studios for their overuse of the multiverse theory.
This film does not go overboard with CGI, and the action scenes are very smooth and well executed. I did not have any complaints regarding the visual aspects of this film. It had a succinct plot that was not so convoluted that the story was unintelligible but left just enough viewers curious as to what was coming next.
Overall, this film was really enjoyable to watch, and I recommend it to any Marvel fans who haven’t had the chance to give it a watch and to fans of the comics as well. This film definitely leans more towards comedy, and while it includes some decently graphic scenes, it was a thrilling experience to watch nonetheless.
