On Sept. 27, UHS held its annual Freshman Club Showcase at the Crossroads during Office Hours, which aimed to introduce freshmen to the vast range of student clubs on campus. Clubs could set up booths to highlight what they had to offer to encourage freshmen to join in the future.
With various clubs available, students had numerous options, ranging from academic, artistic, religious and more. These options allowed students to discover clubs that suited their passions and interests. Additionally, club leaders used this opportunity to provide a sneak peek into what their club was all about.
“I really wanted to share the passion of learning French culture, religion, customs and traditions,” sophomore Shaya Khalili said. “I also wanted to teach students about the importance of French history and how much it contributes to world history.”
Clubs can play a significant role in the high school experience, providing students opportunities to make friendships and explore new interests. Joining a club can offer an escape from other commitments, providing a welcoming atmosphere that encourages one to try new things.
“I started the Muslim Student Association to create a welcoming space for Muslim students,” junior Ayra Omer said. “I want the club to bring people together, create friendships and host events that share our traditions.”
For those considering joining clubs, the showcase introduces students to opportunities they may not have considered before. Numerous academic clubs attend such events as Speech and Debate, Mock Trial and MUN.
“I am interested in picking Eco Club and Restore and Research because I like to be involved,” freshman Matina Bolurchian said. “I am also interested in Academic Decathlon because I like to push myself academically.”
Several clubs were also available for students interested in sports, offering a space to gain knowledge and develop athletic skills. Such clubs may aid in improving one’s mental health.
“I’m joining Surf Club because of my brother,” freshman David Weston said. “He [surfs] nearly every day, and it really improved his mental health. I never truly understood it until I started surfing myself, and it made me a happier person overall. I hope to help others find the same experience.”
Joining clubs can be a valuable experience for many. Clubs provide students with opportunities to get involved in student activities and connect with others and create a community based on shared interests.
