On Oct. 10, the University High School Girls’ Volleyball team played the Sage High School Lightnings in the Trojans’ Game of the Week (GOW), a special pink out game. The players wore pink ribbons in their hair to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The game started off with high hopes for the Trojans, who came into the game with a record of 3-6. However, they lost the first two sets in a quick fashion. They looked like a different team in the third set and managed to win, hoping to turn the tides in their favor. Unfortunately, the Lightnings took back control in the fourth set, resulting in a disappointing 1-3 final score for the Trojans.
“[We] needed more work on tip coverage and getting the ball up on the first pass,” senior Captain Kelly Zhang said. “I think our offense was good and that we were scrambling for balls, but I think it was more careless errors.”
This was their second-to-last game of the season, and despite the loss, their coach had positive things to say about the team.
“[The] team has improved in a lot of different areas, but the one area that stands out the most is our offensive production,” UHS Girls’ Volleyball Head Coach Mike Sofly said. “We had nearly twice as many kills this time around against Sage than we did in the first match against them.”
As Sofly reaffirmed, the team had improved a lot from the start of the season.
“As with any new season, you always want to set the bar pretty high,” Sofly said. “With that said, you always want to make sure your athletes are continuing to improve, working hard, and always [being] outstanding teammates.”
The Trojans’ season has ended, and despite not making the CIF playoffs, the coaches and players should be proud of all they have accomplished and experienced this season.
