This November, the Sword & Shield recognized four fall varsity captains as this November’s Athletes of the Month: senior Ally Kim from girls’ golf, junior Evelyn Hwang from girls’ tennis, senior Kelly Zhang from girls’ volleyball and senior Diego Ramirez from boys’ water polo.
Ally Kim
Kim began playing golf when she was seven. At this age, her father brought her to a driving range to hit her first golf balls. One aspect of high school golf that Kim loves is how her team feels like a family and supports each other.
“I will never forget those moments when my team cheers me on after I tee off the first hole,” Kim said.
Kim plans to continue playing golf as a hobby and is excited to continue playing with friends and family.
Evelyn Hwang
After being inspired by her older brother, whom she sees as a role model, Hwang began playing tennis when she was 11. Hwang appreciates how high school tennis differs from other tournaments in which she competes, as it has a friendly atmosphere.
“My favorite memories are from our long bus rides and bonding with each other over random topics,” Hwang said.
Following her high school career, Hwang aspires to follow in her older brother’s footsteps and play tennis in college.
Kelly Zhang
Zhang began playing volleyball when she was ten years old. Her favorite thing about volleyball is the sport’s community and her team’s supportive environment.
“My favorite memories from the sport were making best friends and winning with them,” Zhang said.
Zhang’s goal with volleyball is to continue her career and play volleyball in college.
Diego Ramirez
Ramirez began playing water polo in middle school, where he played club. When he entered high school, he continued to play on both the school and club teams.
“My favorite things about this sport are the times I spent with my friends or teammates building and improving the team we are today,” Ramirez said.
In the future, he plans to focus on his studies, and if possible, he may play club.
Congratulations to our November Athletes of the Month.
