The University High School Trojans played a challenging match against Godinez High School on Nov. 22. suffering a 0-4 loss in what served as a prelude to their upcoming season-opening games. While the scoreboard was one-sided, the scrimmage did provide valuable lessons for the Trojans as they gear up for league games.
Godinez set the tone for the game early, forcing the UHS goalkeeper to make multiple impressive saves, with the first one just six minutes into the game. Despite multiple strong defensive movements, the Trojans struggled to contain Godinez’s offensive pressure. A freekick in the 22nd minute gave Godinez the lead, which had a mental toll on the Trojans.
“We were dominating in the first half and giving in all our effort until they stepped up on a free kick and banged it in,” sophomore Hafez Malakahmad said. “We fell behind and couldn’t match their press and brilliance for the rest of the game.”
Despite the loss, multiple standout moments showcased the team’s potential. One specific play mentioned was senior Mounir Albakri’s performance in the first half. He faced numerous defenders and stopped the ball, creating a goal-scoring opportunity. However, his attempt at a goal failed, as the ball went slightly wide.
Though the team suffered a loss, the Trojans view the game as a learning experience.
“It was a scrimmage, so we’re not concerned about the result,” senior goalkeeper Sviatoslav Sokolov said. “Even though it was a scrimmage, every single person on the field and on the bench was giving 110% to win the game.”
While the match was a setback, the Trojans remain focused on their long-term goal: a CIF title. Many players will need to shift their mindsets to win their first league game.
“I hope that the game last week was a moment of realization that we are not as good as we think,” Sokolov said. “Over Thanksgiving Break, we were working hard in preparation for our league.”
The Trojans’ season kicked off Dec. 4, with pre-league games against Dana Hills High School and a game against Katella High School with an official record of 0-1-1.
