On Jan. 24, UHS hosted its annual Winter Pep Rally in the Big Gym, marking the official start of the winter sports season. The event introduced winter athletic teams, featured performances from the cheer squad and dance team, and showcased student arts, fostering school spirit and excitement for the season ahead.
UHS Pep Squad traditionally kicks off rallies with a high-energy dance performance, a rewarding experience for the team after months of practice and rehearsal. However, the moments leading up to their performance can be nerve-wracking. Despite their initial fears, many cheerleaders found that the thrill of being in the spotlight took over, transforming anxiety into excitement.
“Performing was really intimidating before we went on [stage], but once I was actually on stage and performing, it was really fun, and I can’t wait to do it again this spring,” sophomore Macy Guadiano said.
Pep rallies are a great way to build excitement for upcoming school events, bringing students and staff together to celebrate school spirit. One of the highlights of this rally was the “Captains’ Game,” where winter sports captains competed against each other and staff members. Many students enjoyed watching both peers and teachers compete, adding an extra layer of fun.
“I’d say my favorite part about the Pep Rally was the Captains’ Game,” senior Sky Jafar said. “It was a really creative game, and it was so much fun to watch. Seeing teachers like Mr. Eric Shulman and Sr. Chris Esposito competing alongside students just made the whole experience even more enjoyable as a spectator.”
Performing in front of a large crowd is a thrilling experience. After weeks of practice and dedication, the moment to showcase a team’s hard work is truly special. The excitement of performing takes over, making every moment rewarding and fulfilling for cheer, dance company and class councils alike.
“It was nerve-wracking to have to perform in front of the school but also very exciting and fun to show the routine we’ve been working on for so long,” sophomore Elise Kim said.
The Winter Pep Rally was a perfect celebration of school spirit, community and winter sports, bringing students and teachers together in a lively and energetic atmosphere. From thrilling performances that showcased students’ talents to the recognition of student-athletes’ hard work and dedication, the event was a memorable highlight of the upcoming winter season.
