On Saturday, February 22, qualifying wrestlers from the University High School (UHS) wrestling team competed in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) individual tournament. Captain Clay Hess (Sr.) finished the weekend in 5th place with an overall record of 4-2. John Farah (Jr.) finished in 4th place with an overall record of 8-2 as well. By being in the top 5 in their weight class, they both qualified for the Masters tournament this weekend.
The Varsity wrestling team competed in Pacific Coast League (PCL) Finals at Irvine high school on February 8th. Farah and Hess both won 1st in PCL with outstanding play. Other notable wrestlers were Kian Ross (So.) and Armin Bid (So.) coming in 3rd place.
UHS wrestled against Irvine High School on January 29, and lost 45-22. Ross won his match 15-0, while Joseph Lai (Jr.), Farah, and Hess all won by pins in their respective weight classes.
The UHS wrestling team went up against the Northwood Timberwolves at an away meet on January 22 and won 51-20. Hess, Lai, Danny Gilbertson (Sr.), and Ibrihim Takesh (So.) all won their matches, Farah won by pin to keep his undefeated season alive.
The Trojans wrestled against Corona Del Mar High School (CDM) on January 15, during the Game of the Week. UHS won 4 of 12 matches against the Sea Kings, but Hess and Farah both won their matches coming off injuries. Two other wrestlers, Joey Dodd (Sr.) and Oscar Parra (Sr.), both suffered injuries during the matches.
The UHS wrestling team lost their meet against Beckman High School on January 8. The Trojans’ top two wrestlers Hess and Farah both were unable to wrestle due to injuries.
UHS’s first meet was at CDM on December 7. They went 2-3, placing 4th place out of 6 teams. Hess went 5-0 and Farah 4-0 against opponents in the heavy weight class. It was a good start to the season for the two by going undefeated in their first meet.
