University High School’s (UHS) Varsity boys golf team started its season with back to back wins against Laguna Hills High school on March 4 and 5. They went on to place 4th out of 12 teams at a tournament at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Course on Monday, March 10. The boys beat Sage Hill High School on Wednesday, March 12, but lost to Mission Viejo High School on Thursday, March 13 and Tuesday, March 18.
On Thursday, March 13, the boys traveled to Mission Viejo Country Club where they lost to Mission Viejo High School by a score of 198-212. They faced the Diablos again on Tuesday, March 18 at Strawberry Farms Golf Course where they lost by a close margin of 193-201.
Ari Gulugian (Jr.) said, “Mission Viejo was a good team, but we played well and definitely improved the second time we played them.”
The team played Sage Hill High School on Wednesday, March 12 at Strawberry Farms Golf Course and won by a score of 199-218. Jordan Cheng (So.) performed the best, ending with a score of 39. After the win, Cheng said, “Today wasn’t as great as we expected. We could have done a lot better, and I hope we can have a great season this year.”
The team competed in a tournament hosted by JSerra High School at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Course on Monday, March 10. UHS played against 12 teams in the Varsity division. Michael Kim (Jr.) played for the first time this season because he wasn’t eligible to play CIF to play in the first two matches. The team placed 4th out of 12 teams overall. Gulugian won the putting contest against about 80 other golfers, while Kim came in 3rd.
Following the tournament, Kim said, “I would say that we played fairly well but have many areas we need to improve on. However, since it is the beginning of the season and this was our first tournament, we have plenty of time.”
UHS played well against Laguna Hills on Tuesday, March 4, and Wednesday, March 5, winning both matches against El Toro. On Tuesday, the boys won 204-225, and on Wednesday they won 182-201.
Bruce Miranda (Jr.) said, “Considering we are a fairly young team this season, with one senior, three juniors, four sophomores, and one freshman, I would like to think that we have a contending team this season. If we continue to play like we did in the last match consistently during league, shooting a team score of 182, we will have a successful season this year.”
The Trojans are looking forward to a good season and are already off to a great start with a record of 3-2. They will compete against Woodbridge High School tomorrow (Tuesday, March 25) at Strawberry Farms Golf Course.
